  1. Let’s start a referendum, or at least a political discussion on this topic, for example on the UN level. Unfortunately economical issues too often overshadow the real humanitarian and ecological points of view. We are living in a world that is highly materialistically orientated, I think this is the real problem. Or do you think that a worldwide ban on mountain climbing is more unrealistic than a gay guy with a flag’s call for “zero hiv/aids infections”?

  2. KATHMANDU — Rescuers on Mount Everest found the body of a 13th Nepalese guide on Saturday as authorities ruled out hope of finding any more survivors from the deadliest accident ever on the world’s highest peak.

Three sherpas remained missing from Friday’s avalanche that struck after a large party of guides left Everest base camp carrying tents, food and ropes to prepare for international clients ahead of the main climbing season.

Towards the evening, rescuers suspended the search until Sunday.

“We have suspended the rescue operation for today. It is risky to continue searching the mountain as evening sets in,” Tourism Ministry official Madhusudan Burlakoti told AFP.

This was the deadliest accident ever on the slopes of the world’s highest mountain. It took place just a few days ago. By now the official number of casualties has been stated to be 14 persons, but many climbers are said to still be trapped and could be lost too. Sherpa’s are paying the toll for the ambitious adventures of rich westerners, who are willing to pay thousands of rupees for their “sportive activities”. My humble opinion is that this should stop. Let’s start are referendum.

  3. I am against mountain climbing! It is harmful for nature, too *** dangerous, and mountains should be respected. Leave them mountains alone, in rest in peace! Bergen zijn geen speelobjecten!

    (and the list continues…..)

“Traffic jams are not the only issue on the world’s most coveted mountain. The climb up Sagarmatha (as it is known in Nepali) is far from being an environmentally-friendly endeavour. Despite several clean-up efforts retrieving tons of garbage from the mountain, and forcing expeditions to take back their trash, empty oxygen bottles and other lost or abandoned gear remain scattered on the peak. Moreover, given the lack of an efficient solid waste management system, for decades expedition members emptied their bowels wherever they could when they had the urge. As a result, human feces have accumulated in the snow, and streams of excrement are periodically regurgitated by the glaciers up in the mountain.”

Only because it’s a good source of income, an industry, it is still allowed to climb mountains as a sport. Otherwise it would be better to restrict people from doing it, in my opinion.
